January 2005 Club Meeting

Our guest speaker for this month was Carolyn Whitmer.

Carolyn is Editor of "The Florida Gardener" published by FFGC.

Bio: Carolyn has served as President of the Pensacola Federation of Garden Clubs where she is a very active member. She has served as Director of District I and chairman of a number of different committees. Carolyn is currently the District’s Wekiva Chairman. She has served as FFGC Bartram Trail Chairman, Landscape Design Critics Liaison, and Assistant Editor of “The Florida Gardener” where she has advanced to the position of Editor. Carolyn is an Accredited Flower Show Judge, a Life Member of both FFGC and National Garden Clubs, Inc. and, she is also in FFGC’s Hall of Fame.

Carolyn's talk was on local native wild flowers.

She is a wealth of knowledge.

She showed us a large array of slides that she had personally taken of wild flowers in the area at various times.

Carolyn also brought with her information from the FFGC about planting wildflowers:

The web page linked above is a copy of the text Carolyn brought and a photo gif of wildflowers from your WebMaster's previous home in SW Georgia. This is in the same zone (Zone 8) as our planting area here in North Florida.

Here are some more beautiful wildflowers (this is a collection of photos so be patient and wait for all of them to download)

More information from Carolyn/FFGC about Wildflower facts: Page 1 -- Page 2 -- these are pdf pages.

Also here is some great information from the University of Florida Extension Service on wildflowers.

Carolyn talked at some length about the Florida Pitcher Plants. This is an informative article on these plants.

Judith gets us organized for our January 15th Arbor Day tree give away. International Paper donated 3500 trees for us to distribute locally. What a blessing after all the tree damage our area received from Hurricane Ivan.

"Jungle Judy" also presented our Plant of the Month and drew one lucky name to receive the baby Amaryllis she brought.

Here's Kathy's pdf report on our meeting
